1. What Hurricanes Are
Hurricanes form on warm ocean water. Scientists don’t actually know the true cause of these strong storms. However, strong winds and water of at least 79 degrees or higher are needed.
A tropical storm is the beginning stages of a hurricane. Once the winds reach 74 miles per hour or higher, the storm is classified as a hurricane.
2. Frequency of Hurricanes
In 2020, there were 30 named storms. This broke the record for the most in history. Before this, in 2005, there were 28 storms in one year.
On average, we will see about 12 tropical storms per year with six of them being named and 3 major hurricanes.
3. The Cost of Hurricanes
The United States Congress has an annual budget. Following the advice of scientists, they have to set aside funds they expect to use for these types of natural disasters.
Strong winds and flooding can cause unfathomable amounts of damage to structures and people. In April of 2019, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that there would be $54 billion in losses related to hurricanes.
For those who live in areas that are susceptible to damages from these storms, it is in their best interest to get additional insurance. When a strong storm comes through, it is possible to lose everything. Knowing that you are covered and have the right insurance for hurricanes is essential.
4. The Worst Hurricane
The deadliest hurricane in history dates all the way back to 1900. The Galveston hurricane of 1900 claimed between 8,000 and 12,000 lives. This category 4 hurricane hit Galveston, Texas during a surge of end of summer tourists.
The costliest hurricane was Katrina, which hit New Orleans, Louisianna in 2005. This horrible disaster is one that many of us are able to remember. It cost $161 billion in damage. The city is still trying to rebuild some areas to this day.
5. Where Do Hurricanes Happen
Hurricane season begins in the Atlantic on June 1 and ends on November 30. There are many basins in which these storms occur. However, the Atlantic Basin is one of the more active areas. This area includes the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Another very active area is the Pacific Basin. These storms are often referred to as cyclones and typhoons as well.
